Updates from Paper Precious

Hello All!

Work has been a tad slow for the past few weeks. The project in progress is a custom wall clock, which will be gifted by a friend to a lady I know.

This project is probably the one on which I spent the maximum time in the design. Nothing seemed to work, and nothing clicked. Finally, I decided to go with the two things I know the lady loves - dancing, and the color yellow!

I will not post the image of the clock here until it has been gifted to the said lady, so that will have to wait!

That said, here is a lineup of the exhibitions at which I will be displaying my work for the next few months -

10 Aug - Artist of the Week at Lansdowne Farmers Market.
7-8 Sept - Visual Artist at Lansdowne Arts Fest

A few workshops are also in the pipeline, more details later!

Cheers!

Clocks...customized

Hello All!

A friend loved the way the White Lotus Clock looked, and wanted something on similar lines, but with a twist. She sent me the image below, asking me whether it was possible to merge this image with the technique of the White Lotus Clock.

The inspiration
This was a tough one! The technique of the White Lotus Clock works best with single paper strips, and hence comes out in a single color. Creating something like the sunflower image above would involve using smaller strips of multiple colors, glued together and then spread out in the given pattern.

Multiple smaller strips = more delicate work = more change of messing things up :)

I decided to give it a try, and came up with the idea of using 3 strips, brown, dark yellow and light yellow, each of 2 mm length, glued together end to end to make one longer strip. These strips were then put together in the pattern of the White Lotus Flower.

Here is how the project looked like half way through -

About a hundred such strips were made, joining smaller strips of brown, dark yellow and light yellow together. In the end, this is how the clock came out -

Custom Sunflower Clock
                                Price - $35
                                Size - appx. 7" diameter

I loved the gradation of the colors, the meticulous work and the patience in making it did pay off!

The friend loved the clock which she gifted it to her cousin as a house-warming present :)

Cheers!

Clocks

Hello!

I love the idea of making clocks with a quilled base. So some time ago, when I found these very reasonable 7 inch diameter clocks at a Chinese market for sale, I grabbed a handful to convert into quilled clocks later.

Clock from the market

The clocks came in various colors for the frame, and I purchased one in each color. The idea was to change the dial into something quilled, and reuse the timepieces and the frames.

I used this tutorial from Pritesh's blog for one of the clocks. Here is the finished piece. Should have probably tried out black on white background or the other way around, I think the clock could do with a little more prominence to the design.

The second clock has a pleasant flowery background without any hour indicators.

There are two more clocks in the works, will hopefully finish them soon!

Blue Swirls Wall Clock

Hello!

For some time now, I have been fascinated and eager to try a new technique in quilling, something that I call 'Paper Crossovers'. It is the technique in which the artist gives the appearance of the papers intersecting each other, something like this -

http://averychocolatewedding.blogspot.com/2011/04/and-my-very-second-quilled-letter.html
It is a *very* painstaking technique, where one has to cut the paper strips of small lengths and then assemble them together to create smooth curves. The effort is worth the end product though.

Here is my attempt at making a wall clock using this technique.

The timepiece is yet to be added to the clock. Notice the flower shape created from the paper intersections. Keeping in line with the blue theme, the background is a dark blue and black combination.

Here is a closeup of the coils and the swirls.

Next project - lettering using this technique!

Sunflower Wall Clock

Hello!

Time to try something new! Pritesh from Aadya Originals had this idea of making a wall clock, and I simply loved it! It inspired me to make my own quilled wall clock.

So here it is, my sunflower wall clock -

GA004 - Sunflower Wall Clock
The petals are a shade of yellow, orange and red, and their size increases by the hour. The clock is about 6 inches in diameter, perfect for a table clock, or the wall of a small study nook. It is a proper working clock, and runs on a single AA battery.

Here is a short tutorial of how I made this one.

The initial sketch of the clock, with tentative coloring -

Putting it all together -

The assembly is mounted on a thick cardboard to make it stand stiffly. I have used the Wallnut Hollow 1/4th inch timepiece (http://www.walnuthollow.com/238563pcclockkit14.aspx) for the clock, which just needed to be fitted in the center after cutting out a small hole.

Lo and behold! A perfectly working wall clock is ready!

Cheers!
