Updates from the Paper Precious family

Hello All!

Life has been incredibly busy for the past month. You see, there has been an addition to the Paper Precious family...I have had the fortune of having something very very precious in my life...my son, who was born on 20th October :)

The page count on my site suggests that there have been readers visiting the site even though I have not posted anything new, and my heartfelt thank you to all you nice people! Those who have missed me and my posts (if such wonderful species of readers does in fact exist), my sincere apologies. My son has been keeping me on my toes, though I plan to return to quilling as soon as I get his routine established.

Till then, please hang on...there are lots of new ideas in my mind, and they will be down in paper pretty soon.

Happy holidays!

Cheers!

Detachable Christmas Ornaments

Hello All!

A friend suggested this idea of making a Christmas card / ornament, and I simply loved it. I love cards, but hate it when they get dumped somewhere after the occasion. One can finally get around this problem by detaching the ornament from the card, and putting it up on the Christmas tree, year after year!

Here are a few ornament cards with a Christmas theme, and they seem to be the ideal holiday gift! Snowflakes, candies and Christmas trees...bring on the holidays :)

Sparkly Snowflake Ornament Card

Christmas Candy Ornament Card

Clocks...customized

Hello All!

A friend loved the way the White Lotus Clock looked, and wanted something on similar lines, but with a twist. She sent me the image below, asking me whether it was possible to merge this image with the technique of the White Lotus Clock.

The inspiration
This was a tough one! The technique of the White Lotus Clock works best with single paper strips, and hence comes out in a single color. Creating something like the sunflower image above would involve using smaller strips of multiple colors, glued together and then spread out in the given pattern.

Multiple smaller strips = more delicate work = more change of messing things up :)

I decided to give it a try, and came up with the idea of using 3 strips, brown, dark yellow and light yellow, each of 2 mm length, glued together end to end to make one longer strip. These strips were then put together in the pattern of the White Lotus Flower.

Here is how the project looked like half way through -

About a hundred such strips were made, joining smaller strips of brown, dark yellow and light yellow together. In the end, this is how the clock came out -

Custom Sunflower Clock
                                Price - $35
                                Size - appx. 7" diameter

I loved the gradation of the colors, the meticulous work and the patience in making it did pay off!

The friend loved the clock which she gifted it to her cousin as a house-warming present :)

Cheers!

The Craft Fair Experience

Hello All!

As you have read/heard, I had been shouting about this from the rooftops for quite some time. Paper Precious put up a booth at a local craft exhibition, and I am very happy to note that it was a wonderful wonderful experience! From planning to set the booth up, to sitting out braving the chilly wind wearing slippers, to meeting some amazing people, it was all awesomeness packaged together.

We had to set the booth up early at 7.30 AM, and I was so excited and adrenaline-rushed, that I was unable to sleep at all the night before. It was probably the first time I woke up before the alarm went off! The fair was to take place in the parking lot of a local church, and when we reached there, I saw many booth owners already arrived and busy setting up their stalls. We were greeted by very friendly volunteers and participants. I had practiced putting up the booth at home, and was fairly confident that my helper and I could do it in half an hour straight, but the wind decided to play errant that day. Even though my display stands were weighed down with big heavy books, the wind kept knocking them off. At one unsuspecting moment, my Christmas tree, along with all the pretty handmade ornaments draped around it threatened to fly away into the neighbors booth. An hour into the setup, we had fairly stabilized everything and settled down to receive the first visitors of the day.

Putting up your work for complete strangers to see is the ultimate test for a craftsman. Strangers are not prejudiced to like it as your friends and family are. They have no obligation to kindly praise you, or motivate you in any manner. I watched with apprehension as people passed by my stall, some barely giving it a glance, but soon enough, people had started to stop in their tracks, take a long look at our stall (albeit from a distance), and then draw in for a closer look. People were very friendly, and soon we were engaging a lot of visitors into conversation about the craft and techniques involved. A couple of guys bought a few things, chatted for a long time, and left, only to return in a few minutes to take another look at the table. No doubt, I was beaming :)

The highlight of the day though was the people I came across. I love seeing people, observing them, and seeing bits of varied emotions and actions translate into the basic humanity that we are.

A little girl at the booth next to mine visited me at least five times throughout the day. She would just run over to the table, and keep looking at the items. Finally she convinced her mother to come along, and left only when she had bought a couple of items she had her heart set on. Oh the joys of seeing wonder and appreciation in innocent young eyes!

A lady from the booth across voluntarily gave her shawl to a shivering lady in the next booth. I am always humbled by such displays of such kindness and humanity.

Towards the end of the day, an elderly American gentleman stepped into the booth, looked around and asked me if I was from India. When I replied affirmatively, he proceeded to say "Yeh bohot accha hai" (This is very nice). It took all my effort to try not to fall backwards reeling with surprise. I managed to mumble a meek "Dhanyawaad" (Thank you). The gentleman proceeded to amaze me further by telling that he grew up in India as a kid, in Assam and Darjeeling, and had been to India every  year for the past eight years. When I expressed my surprise at his remembering the language, he responded quietly "Hum Hindustani samajhta hai" (I can understand Hindi).

People never cease to amaze and awe me.

With such a wonderful experience at the first fair, I am very much looking forward to the next ones! Here are some pics from the fair -

Ready to Ship

Hello All!

Mixed feelings - excitement and pride mixed with a twinge of sadness. Why, you ask? I just sold one of my frames. The 'Bluebells and Butterflies' frame.

I know it is going to a happy, art-loving home and the folks who bought it will adore it, and I am happy to be the creator of something which people see worthy of putting up in their homes. But at the same time, it feels a bit sad to see it all packed and ready to depart.

Wrapped and Ready

Plastic wrap - check.
Bubble wrap - check.
Double bubble wrap - check.

Hope it reaches safe and sound, and its new owners enjoy displaying it as much as I enjoyed making it!

Home Decor - Wall Frames

Hello All!

Preparations for the Lansdowne Market fair are in full swing. In addition to holiday items like ornaments and greeting cards, I am also creating more home decor items. Here are a few created recently. I just cant get over flowers, as you will see in the photos below!

A flower basket full of colorful flowers. The basket is cut out from a table mat :)

An apt gift for a music lover, this wall plaque is made with the technique I call 'Paper Crossovers'. Shades of brown cross over elegantly to form intricate patterns of the staff. The notes stand on top of the staff, in bright blue.

Orchids

Hello All!

Frames are on my mind for the past few days, and this one is the first of a batch of quite a few - Orange and pink orchids on a branch, with beautiful leaves in shades of green. Did you see the pale buds about to blossom? I have used an actual twig in this frame to give it a more realistic look.

Clocks

Hello!

I love the idea of making clocks with a quilled base. So some time ago, when I found these very reasonable 7 inch diameter clocks at a Chinese market for sale, I grabbed a handful to convert into quilled clocks later.

Clock from the market

The clocks came in various colors for the frame, and I purchased one in each color. The idea was to change the dial into something quilled, and reuse the timepieces and the frames.

I used this tutorial from Pritesh's blog for one of the clocks. Here is the finished piece. Should have probably tried out black on white background or the other way around, I think the clock could do with a little more prominence to the design.

The second clock has a pleasant flowery background without any hour indicators.
GA007 - Flower Wall Clock

There are two more clocks in the works, will hopefully finish them soon!

Quillography

Hello!

Quillography, or lettering using quilling is quickly turning into one of my favorite quilling items to do. Made this frame as an entry to the challenge posted by Pritesh.

I simply love the complexity in making the 'Paper Crossovers' as I call them. Paper strips intersect each other on the canvas to create wonderful meshed graphics. One has to be very careful in making these crossovers as the curves have to be perfect, look like intersecting lines, and not just pieces of paper glued side by side. This would be a good candidate for a tutorial!

Here is the finished product - EARTH.
FR003 - Quillography, EARTH
I had a green theme in mind for a long time, and initially thought of making thick 2D letters in white, surrounded by various leaves in shades of green. But while I was trying out the letters in various fonts, the 'E' seemed to be a perfect candidate to sprout a few lush leaves. The other letters quickly followed suit, and soon became entangled into one entity with the brown soil and the greens meshing together, not to mention the sparse blue popping out on the top! My vision of earth :)

Here is a view from a different angle -

A close-up of the leaves.

The challenge requires a minimum A4 size product, so here it is with the ruler to show the scale.

Blue Swirls Wall Clock

Hello!

For some time now, I have been fascinated and eager to try a new technique in quilling, something that I call 'Paper Crossovers'. It is the technique in which the artist gives the appearance of the papers intersecting each other, something like this -

http://averychocolatewedding.blogspot.com/2011/04/and-my-very-second-quilled-letter.html
It is a *very* painstaking technique, where one has to cut the paper strips of small lengths and then assemble them together to create smooth curves. The effort is worth the end product though.

Here is my attempt at making a wall clock using this technique.

GA005 - Blue Swirls Wall Clock
The timepiece is yet to be added to the clock. Notice the flower shape created from the paper intersections. Keeping in line with the blue theme, the background is a dark blue and black combination.

Here is a closeup of the coils and the swirls.

Next project - lettering using this technique!

Quilling for Kids

Hello!

Quilling, and working with kids - two things I absolutely love! Paper Precious had two wonderful girls over for a basic quilling workshop this week, and between the incessant chatting, laughing and quilling, it was a fun riot :)

Sufi and Shreenidhi, both enjoyed the workshop so much, that they were refusing to stop and go home even after three hours of continuous hard quilling work! They both arrived at the workshop super excited and eager to start, and I am glad their enthusiasm did not falter at a single moment throughout.

They prepared a lovely bookmark and a greeting card each, and left smiling :)

All smiles with their greeting cards
Loved having you over girls!

Sunflower Wall Clock

Hello!

Time to try something new! Pritesh from Aadya Originals had this idea of making a wall clock, and I simply loved it! It inspired me to make my own quilled wall clock.

So here it is, my sunflower wall clock -

GA004 - Sunflower Wall Clock
The petals are a shade of yellow, orange and red, and their size increases by the hour. The clock is about 6 inches in diameter, perfect for a table clock, or the wall of a small study nook. It is a proper working clock, and runs on a single AA battery.

Here is a short tutorial of how I made this one.

The initial sketch of the clock, with tentative coloring -

Quilling petals of the required sizes -

Putting it all together -

The assembly is mounted on a thick cardboard to make it stand stiffly. I have used the Wallnut Hollow 1/4th inch timepiece (http://www.walnuthollow.com/238563pcclockkit14.aspx) for the clock, which just needed to be fitted in the center after cutting out a small hole.

Lo and behold! A perfectly working wall clock is ready!

Cheers!

More Miniatures

Hello!

Miniatures are cute. Miniatures are pretty. Miniatures are challenging! The miniature 3D flower pot and butterfly got me hooked on to making more 3D quilled items, and here are a few I came up with.

A word of caution for beginner quillers who want to make 3D miniatures, make sure you bring a LOT of patience to the table. The coils are going to get big, they are going to unravel at the most inopportune time, and the miniatures are going to refuse to stand up on their own. But what the heck...overcoming these challenges is the fun part!

Miniature Doll - Standing in her frilly white and blue dress, with her curls blowing around her angelic face, the doll is about 3 inches tall, and can stand on  her own on her bling studded heels :). She wears a light yellow hat, with a bling studded blue bow.

FG002 - Miniature Doll
Giraffe and Hippo Set - A dancing hippo and a smiling giraffe standing side by side. Notice the lavish eyelashes the hippo has! Inspired from Melman and Gloria from the movie Madagascar.

FG003 - Giraffe and Hippo

WALL-E and Eva Set - One of my favorite animation movies, and favorite characters. They are holding hands...awww...

FG004 - WALL-E and Eva

I loved making these characters, and would love making different ones! Which characters would you like to see on your table?

Cheers!
