Blue Swirls Wall Clock

Hello!

For some time now, I have been fascinated and eager to try a new technique in quilling, something that I call 'Paper Crossovers'. It is the technique in which the artist gives the appearance of the papers intersecting each other, something like this -

http://averychocolatewedding.blogspot.com/2011/04/and-my-very-second-quilled-letter.html
It is a *very* painstaking technique, where one has to cut the paper strips of small lengths and then assemble them together to create smooth curves. The effort is worth the end product though.

Here is my attempt at making a wall clock using this technique.

GA005 - Blue Swirls Wall Clock
The timepiece is yet to be added to the clock. Notice the flower shape created from the paper intersections. Keeping in line with the blue theme, the background is a dark blue and black combination.

Here is a closeup of the coils and the swirls.

Next project - lettering using this technique!

Cheers!

Quilling for Kids

Hello!

Quilling, and working with kids - two things I absolutely love! Paper Precious had two wonderful girls over for a basic quilling workshop this week, and between the incessant chatting, laughing and quilling, it was a fun riot :)

Sufi and Shreenidhi, both enjoyed the workshop so much, that they were refusing to stop and go home even after three hours of continuous hard quilling work! They both arrived at the workshop super excited and eager to start, and I am glad their enthusiasm did not falter at a single moment throughout.

They prepared a lovely bookmark and a greeting card each, and left smiling :)

All smiles with their greeting cards
Loved having you over girls!

Sunflower Wall Clock

Hello!

Time to try something new! Pritesh from Aadya Originals had this idea of making a wall clock, and I simply loved it! It inspired me to make my own quilled wall clock.

So here it is, my sunflower wall clock -

GA004 - Sunflower Wall Clock
The petals are a shade of yellow, orange and red, and their size increases by the hour. The clock is about 6 inches in diameter, perfect for a table clock, or the wall of a small study nook. It is a proper working clock, and runs on a single AA battery.

Here is a short tutorial of how I made this one.

The initial sketch of the clock, with tentative coloring -

Quilling petals of the required sizes -

Putting it all together -

The assembly is mounted on a thick cardboard to make it stand stiffly. I have used the Wallnut Hollow 1/4th inch timepiece (http://www.walnuthollow.com/238563pcclockkit14.aspx) for the clock, which just needed to be fitted in the center after cutting out a small hole.

Lo and behold! A perfectly working wall clock is ready!

Cheers!

More Miniatures

Hello!

Miniatures are cute. Miniatures are pretty. Miniatures are challenging! The miniature 3D flower pot and butterfly got me hooked on to making more 3D quilled items, and here are a few I came up with.

A word of caution for beginner quillers who want to make 3D miniatures, make sure you bring a LOT of patience to the table. The coils are going to get big, they are going to unravel at the most inopportune time, and the miniatures are going to refuse to stand up on their own. But what the heck...overcoming these challenges is the fun part!

Miniature Doll - Standing in her frilly white and blue dress, with her curls blowing around her angelic face, the doll is about 3 inches tall, and can stand on  her own on her bling studded heels :). She wears a light yellow hat, with a bling studded blue bow.

FG002 - Miniature Doll
Giraffe and Hippo Set - A dancing hippo and a smiling giraffe standing side by side. Notice the lavish eyelashes the hippo has! Inspired from Melman and Gloria from the movie Madagascar.

FG003 - Giraffe and Hippo

WALL-E and Eva Set - One of my favorite animation movies, and favorite characters. They are holding hands...awww...

FG004 - WALL-E and Eva

I loved making these characters, and would love making different ones! Which characters would you like to see on your table?

Quilled Jewellery - Part 3

Hello!

It's pendant and hair accessory time! I made a couple of items for my little niece, R, who loved them and kindly posed for me wearing them. The purple flower in her hair is made using the combing technique, and the red flower she is wearing as a pendant is a shaded Malaysian flower. Doesn't she look adorable? :)

A couple of more flowers that can be worn as pendants or hair accessories. The pink one is inspired by the beautiful flower 'Sadafuli', or 'Vinca Rosea' that is in abundant bloom around my house. The yellow one is the same as the one R is wearing as a pendant, just in a different color.

PEN001, PEN002 - Malaysian Flower, Vinca

Here is a close-up of the purple flower R is wearing in the first picture, along with a couple of other pendants. The center one is also made using the combing technique, using a gradation of colors. I forget the name of the method used to make the 'Twisted Flower', will upload a tutorial and the name as soon as I remember it!

Quilled Fan

Hello!

I had seen this beautiful design on a website, unfortunately I do not remember which website. The creator had made a quilled fan, which I have tried to reproduce here. Please let me know if someone comes across the original work, I would love to link it through the post.

The fan can be framed, or put up as is as wall decor.

This design turned out to be much more tedious that I had thought it would be, since all the flowers, petals and curves had to be the same size. Gluing the curves was also a challenge, but I am happy at the final product :) Loved the idea of a quilled fan!

Lettering

Hello!

After seeing some wonderful examples of quilled lettering online, I wanted to try my hand at it too. Not an easy task, it required quite some patience, and skill with the glue. Here is the finished product - a 'Welcome' sign for the front door.

The lettering is free-hand, and is filled using the beehiving technique.

LET001 - Welcome
Cannot wait to put it up on the door!

Marine Life

Hello!

Planning for a vacation to Florida inspired me to come up with a quilled frame with an underwater setting. Hope you like it!

FR002 - Marine Life
The fish are made using a technique called 'multi-strip scroll', with an added twist on the 'tail'. Thanks Suganthi for introducing me to this technique. I had collected some ocean glass a few years ago, and that made up for a very apt bed of rocks for the weeds to sprout from.

Greeting cards

Hello!

Yesterday was a busy day, quilling-wise, and at the end of it I had multiple greeting cards ready to be handed out.

Tried out the 'beehiving' technique, and fell completely in love with it. Here is a rainbow heart card, made using the beehiving technique. Thank you Susan for inventing this technique! The quilling community owes a lot to you. A big thanks to Pritesh for introducing me to this beautiful technique.

GC003 - Rainbow Heart

A simple card created using the looping technique.

GC004 - Looped Flower

Another one with 'Malaysian flowers' on it. These are my favorite quilled flowers so far! The leaves are made using combing. Will put up a tutorial on both these techniques soon.

GC005 - Malaysian Flowers

One more simple card, with a lovely butterfly!

GC006 - Flower and Butterfly

All these cards are purposefully left blank, without any message printed in them, so that they can be used for any occasion.

Butterflies in my home

Hello!

A friend gifted me a scarf with exquisite butterflies painted on it. Got me making a range of various quilled butterflies!

A delicate butterfly, can be framed and put up as wall decor, or can be made into a greeting card. Don't you just love the bling on it!

FR001 - Bling Butterfly
One more card with a different type of butterfly on it. The wings are made using a technique called 'multiple color looping', and the body is a solid paper bead.

GC002 - Looped Butterfly
I love butterflies. Rest assured, there will be more quilled items featuring them, soon!

Have a good day!

Hello!

Red lady bugs are my favorite insect. They take me back to stories I had read as a kid, about Mrs. Lady Bug, who lived in Flowerville, and was always busy gathering nectar.

Found a poster online, and it turned out to be a wonderful inspiration for a quilled greeting card.

A 'good day' greeting card to brighten someone's day...
